Hair Loss Market Surges: New Treatments & Potential Insurance Coverage

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

South Korea is considering expanding health insurance coverage for hair loss treatments, a move prompted by growing concern among young people and a recent suggestion from President Yoon Suk Yeol to explore the possibility. The president framed hair loss as a “matter of survival” for many, signaling a potential shift in how the country addresses the issue.

The global hair loss market is projected to reach $16 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual rate of 8.7%, according to a recent report by Grand View Research. Pharmaceutical treatments currently dominate the market, accounting for 98.8% of all therapies.

Increasingly, hair loss is affecting younger demographics, driven by factors such as stress and dietary habits. Globally, an estimated 147 million people suffer from alopecia areata, and analysis suggests 40% of men experience some degree of hair loss by age 35. In South Korea, approximately 10 million people are believed to be affected.

Domestic pharmaceutical companies are actively developing new treatments. JW중외제약 (JW Pharmaceutical) recently received a U.S. Patent for ‘JW0061’, a novel compound targeting the GFRA1 receptor, which plays a crucial role in various tissues, including those involved in hair growth. The company states that JW0061 directly binds to stem cells in hair follicles, promoting hair growth.

Ollix and 종근당 (JonggeunDang) are also conducting clinical trials to gather data for potential hair loss treatments. Globally, Italian pharmaceutical company Cosmo Pharmaceuticals reported positive results in Phase 3 clinical trials for ‘clascoterone’ 5% solution, a new treatment for male pattern baldness. U.S.-based Pelage Pharmaceutics is preparing to enter Phase 3 trials for ‘PP405’, a hair loss treatment utilizing stem cell technology.

The potential expansion of health insurance coverage comes as the market attracts increased investment and innovation. The government has not yet announced a specific timeline or plan for implementing any changes to insurance coverage, leaving the future of the proposal uncertain.
