persistent Colds: Why You Might Be getting Sick While others Stay Well
BERLIN – As cold and flu season peaks, many are wondering why they seem to be constantly battling symptoms while friends remain healthy.Experts say a combination of lifestyle factors, exposure, and individual health conditions can explain the disparity, with vaccination playing a key role in protection.
According to Philipp Jent, a medical expert, a healthy lifestyle – including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep – can positively impact overall well-being and recovery, though its effect on preventing infection is limited. Avoiding crowded indoor spaces, regular ventilation, and mask-wearing during periods of high virus circulation are also recommended preventative measures.
however, Jent emphasizes the significant protective benefit of annual flu vaccination, stating it reduces the risk of influenza by over half. Covid-19 vaccination remains recommended for at-risk individuals, and those interacting with vulnerable populations should consider masking when experiencing cold symptoms.
Beyond prevention, certain remedies can lessen the duration of a cold. Jent notes that nasal rinses with salt water may slightly shorten illness, and zinc sprays could offer similar benefits. Home remedies can also help alleviate symptoms.
Vulnerability to infection isn’t uniform. Children and young people are especially susceptible due to rapid virus spread in schools and daycare centers. Individuals with chronic illnesses also face a higher risk due to less resilient immune systems. Immune function naturally declines with age, leading to drier mucous membranes and increased susceptibility, and also a greater risk of severe illness due to age-related immune changes and the prevalence of chronic diseases. Pneumonia, for example,is more likely in older individuals with pre-existing lung damage.
Jent advises anyone experiencing frequent or prolonged illness to consult their family doctor for further evaluation.
