Grimes Reveals Face Tattoo, Sparks Online Debate
Los Angeles, CA - Singer Grimes debuted a new, subtle circular tattoo around her left eye on Wednesday, prompting a swift and often harsh reaction online. The artist, known for her futuristic aesthetic and previous body modifications including “alien scar tattoos,” revealed the ink, describing a decade-long emotional preparation for the decision.
Grimes shared on social media that she “spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo,” only to find “I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed,not even my parents.” She lauded the tattoo artist, @glyphomancer, calling their work “truly novel and innovative” and noting a current “crazy renaissance period” within tattoo culture.
however,the internet’s response was largely critical,with numerous comments comparing the tattoo to a fungal infection. Reactions ranged from “Is the tattoo in the room with us?” to ”you tattooed ringworm on yoru face?” and “I remember my first ringworm.” One commenter even asked, “What’s ur favorite pasta noodle shape?”
Despite the negativity, some users offered support, with comments like “everyone’s so mean I like it” and “It looks so great on youuu.” The post garnered over 150,000 likes.
Grimes has been vocal about her desire to physically alter her appearance, previously stating in June 2023, “Changed my body from the way God made it, it reflects my altered mind.” She first publicly considered a face tattoo in 2022, sharing a selfie with the caption, “I am very seriously considering getting a white ink tattoo on my face next week.”
The singer has also expressed interest in more dramatic modifications,including surgically implanted elf ears - a procedure reportedly opposed by her ex-partner,Elon Musk – and vampire teeth.
