GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Greenville mother is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon following her arrest in Philadelphia last month in connection to the November death of her 6-year-old son.
Saunsiree Jefferson, 25, was taken into custody and returned to Pitt County to face charges of felony negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and involuntary manslaughter.Greenville Police began searching for Jefferson last year after responding to a suspicious death report at the Knights Inn located at 3435 S. Memorial Drive.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the child deceased in a motel room where his family resided in reportedly unsanitary conditions. An autopsy later revealed the boy had been suffering from leukemia, and investigators determined a lack of medical care significantly contributed to his death.
The child’s father, 27-year-old Timothy Curry, was arrested in May by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and faces identical charges. Curry’s arraignment is scheduled for October.
Jefferson is being held on a $500,000 bond and will make her initial court appearance at the Pitt County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. today.
