5.1‍ Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Greece Near Athens Today: USGS

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Greece near Athens today,February ⁢26,2024,according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was recorded at a depth of 19.8 kilometers (12.3 miles) and occurred approximately⁣ 24 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Athens.While initial reports indicate moderate shaking ⁤was felt in the capital, there ‌are⁢ currently no reports of significant damage or casualties. The earthquake is part of a seismically active region,⁤ and today’s event underscores⁤ the ongoing risk faced by ⁣communities in Greece. the USGS reported ⁤a ​3.6 magnitude aftershock occurred approximately 20 minutes after the initial quake.
