Grand Millennium Shanghai HongQiao Celebrates 20 Years of MHR in China
Grand Millennium Shanghai HongQiao is celebrating its 20th anniversary on October 26, 2026, marking two decades since Millennium Hotels and Resorts launched its first property in mainland China.
Two Decades of Hospitality in Shanghai
Opened in 2006 as Millennium Hotel Hongqiao Shanghai, the property established the hotel group’s presence in mainland China. Four years after the initial launch, the group increased its stake in Grand Millennium Beijing to 70 percent in 2010. The company’s operations later received industry recognition when Millennium Hotels and Resorts was named Best International Hotel Management Group of China at the 2021 AHF Asia Hotel and Travel Forum Annual Meeting and 16th China Hotel Starlight Awards.
Reflecting on the milestone, Millennium Hotels and Resorts Executive Chairman Kwek Leng Beng said that twenty years ago the property marked the beginning of the company’s journey in mainland China. He stated that the initial investment reflected confidence in the city’s potential as a leading international business and hospitality destination.
Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the city’s remarkable transformation and are proud to have been part of its growth,
Kwek said in statements.

International Partnerships and Community Work
The hotel has maintained long-standing operational relationships with several international transport and sports entities over its history. Singapore Airlines cabin crew have stayed at the property since 2008, and Lufthansa crew arrangements date back to 2019. The location has also hosted personnel associated with Formula 1 racing events in Shanghai.
Beyond corporate travel, the venue has served as a backdrop for diplomatic functions, including Netherlands Queen’s Day events alongside Swiss and Singapore National Day celebrations. In 2026, the hotel hosted a Latin American BBQ Food Festival attended by the Consul General of Chile.
The property’s community outreach includes a partnership with Beacon of Love, a Shanghai-based volunteer charity group. Since 2008, the hotel has worked with the organization to support underprivileged children across China who require congenital heart surgery.
Hotel Offers Guest Upgrades for 20th Anniversary
To mark the 20th anniversary, the hotel has rolled out celebratory initiatives throughout October 2026. The first 20 guests checking in daily receive complimentary room upgrades and welcome experiences.
Managing Director and Owner’s Representative for China Gao Xiang noted that the milestone reflects the sustained efforts of the staff and the loyalty of the clientele.
Many of these relationships have developed over years, and that sense of trust and connection gives this anniversary its real meaning,
Gao said.
