PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University (GCU) women’s soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Oregon on Sunday, marking their third consecutive shutout against the Ducks and extending their winning streak in the series. The Lopes’ strong defensive performance, anchored by goalkeeper Deanna Knack, proved pivotal in the win.
Knack, a transfer from South Dakota State, recorded 17 saves across a four-day road trip including a career-high 11 saves against Oregon. Coach Chris Cissell praised Knack’s performance, stating, “She absolutely balled out and made amazing save after amazing save today. We are lucky to have her.” the 11-save performance ranks fourth all-time among GCU Division I goalkeepers. A late defensive play saw graduate defender Kennedy Chambers add a save following a Knack deflection.
GCU’s offense struck early, with senior forward Hannah Smith scoring in the 5th minute off a pass from junior midfielder Madison Hamm. It was Smith’s second career goal and her first game-winner, while Hamm now leads the team with two assists in four matches. Sophomore midfielder Tatum Hofstetter added a second goal in the 20th minute with a shot from 5 yards behind the penalty box – her first career goal after transferring from Ole Miss.
“Both goals were so great and crucial for us today,” Cissell said. “Smith’s was so big for her as a senior and a captain of this team, she’s really coming into her own this season. Tatum being able to score the way she did against the opponent she did – really proud of her as well.”
The Lopes will return home to face sam Houston on Friday at GCU Stadium for Athlete Alumni Night, followed by a match against Idaho on September 11, coinciding with GCU’s “March to the Match” event.
