Almost half of British adults consume supplements monthly, hoping to boost their well-being.However, Dr. Ahmed warns that one of the UK’s most common pills, the multivitamin, could increase the risk of severe health problems, including liver failure, bone issues, and bleeding disorders. His warning aligns with findings from a National Cancer Institute study in Maryland, which indicated that daily multivitamin intake was associated with a 4% higher risk of death over a 20-year period [1]. The study found no evidence that multivitamins prolonged life.

Dr.Ahmed highlighted that multivitamins frequently enough contain over 100% of the recommended daily allowance of various vitamins and minerals, which can be dangerous. The NHS recommends an average adult male needs 700 micrograms (µg) of vitamin A daily, while women need 600µg. Some multivitamins contain as much as 800µg per tablet.

Unlike water-soluble vitamins, excess amounts of fat-soluble vitamins like A and K don’t simply get flushed out. Rather, they accumulate in the body, potentially leading to severe health consequences. “For things like vitamin A and vitamin K which are fat soluble it can be quite dangerous and potentially in the long term can lead to liver failure, bone problems, and even bleeding and blood clot disorders,” Dr. Ahmed explained.
