Government Reduces Petrol Price, Increases Diesel Rates

August 11, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

On August 12, the government adjusted retail fuel costs nationwide, lowering petrol by Rs1.70 to settle at Rs325.92 per litre while raising high-speed diesel by Rs1.39 to reach Rs382.25 per litre.

Fiscal Pressures and the Shift to Daily Pricing Mechanics

The transition to daily pricing mechanisms stems from volatility in international energy markets following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US that began earlier in the year. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik previously outlined that fuel prices would be fixed on a daily basis to mitigate systemic shocks.

Concurrently, petrol prices climbed sharply from a March baseline of Rs266 per litre to reach a high of Rs458.41 on April 3. State levies remain a heavy component of the retail structure. The federal government continues to levy Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol alongside Rs100 per litre on high-speed diesel.

Sector Impacts and Commercial Resistance

The All Pakistan Dealers Association said it would consider a protest plan over operational unpredictability. High-speed diesel consumption remains vital for heavy transport networks, industrial power plants, and large commercial generators. Meanwhile, petrol directly fuels private transport, small vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and two-wheelers, compounding cost-of-living pressures for middle and lower-middle-class households.

Monthly sales volumes for petrol and high-speed diesel hover between 700,000 and 800,000 tonnes, contrasted against a meager 10,000 tonnes of monthly demand for kerosene. This volume disparity underscores the heavy revenue reliance the state places on these two core products.

Supply Chain Volatility and Strategic Enterprise Adaptation
