The release date for the Gothic 1 Remake has been set for June 5, 2026, publisher THQ Nordic announced today. The action role-playing game will launch simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer, titled “Return to the Colony,” showcasing updated visuals and familiar locations from the original game. According to a description accompanying the trailer, players will be “locked in a prison with no escape,” where “obedience is demanded, hierarchy is enforced, and power dominates all.”
Developed by Alkimia Interactive, the Gothic 1 Remake aims to faithfully recreate the experience of the 2001 original with modern graphics and gameplay. The game is set in the mining colony of Khorinis, within the Kingdom of Myrtana. King Rhobar II initiated the mining operation to acquire magical ore for weapons to defend against an orcish invasion, erecting a magical barrier to prevent escape. However, the barrier malfunctioned, trapping the prisoners who subsequently rebelled, establishing a lawless territory governed by the most ruthless inmates.
Players will assume the role of an unknown prisoner whose arrival will disrupt the established order within the colony. THQ Nordic stated the remake will feature expanded and more detailed questlines, additional NPC routines and reactions, new traversal abilities, and a fully modernized combat system. The developers are rebuilding the game in Unreal Engine 5, preserving the story and spirit of the original while overhauling core gameplay elements.
The project has been described as a full reimagining of the classic, rather than a simple graphical upgrade. Alkimia Interactive is focused on maintaining the original game’s emphasis on unrestricted exploration and player agency.
The fifth developer diary released alongside the date announcement focused on the creation of the game world, highlighting the team’s efforts to recreate the atmosphere of the original Gothic.
