Ship Bottom Fire Company Bolsters Ranks, Continues Recruitment Drive
Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire company has seen a positive influx of personnel, welcoming eight pre-certified volunteers since teh start of its recruitment campaign in 2022. The company, which has served the community since 1922, responds to approximately 300 calls annually, encompassing fires, car accidents, and water rescues across 12 miles of coastline and roughly 7,000 homes and businesses.
The recent additions bring valuable experience and a dedication to expanding firefighting knowledge. Among the new volunteers is a 25-year-old, fourth-generation firefighter who also volunteers with Forked River volunteer Fire Company and works as a per diem firefighter in South Brunswick. He was drawn to Ship Bottom by the unique challenges presented by island firefighting. He recounted a recent call during October’s nor’easter, where streets were flooded with over three feet of water, highlighting the complexities of accessing hydrants in such conditions and the potential need for alternative water sources like drafting directly from the street. He emphasized the importance of adaptability and having contingency plans in the field.
Another new volunteer, a 38-year-old former machine gunner with the U.S. Army and National Guard who served in Afghanistan, joined Ship Bottom after being inspired by the events of September 11, 2001. He continues to volunteer with Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company. He cited the dynamic nature of firefighting, the need for fast thinking, and the camaraderie of working within a highly-trained team as key motivators. He also acknowledged the benefit of the duty-crew stipend offered through a FEMA grant.
Ship Bottom Fire Company President Peraria stressed that while pre-certified firefighters can quickly integrate into response efforts, individuals with no prior experience are also warmly welcomed. All training and necessary gear are provided to volunteers at no cost.
the company’s primary need is for volunteers who reside or work on Long Beach Island (LBI) or in nearby communities year-round, to ensure 24/7 coverage throughout the year.
