Google Doubles Down on Investment in Mexico‘s Future: Education, SMEs, and Infrastructure
Google is significantly expanding its investment and initiatives in Mexico, focusing on bolstering education, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and improving public infrastructure through artificial intelligence (AI). Several Google executives detailed these plans, highlighting a commitment to Mexico’s economic and technological growth.
A key focus is addressing the skills gap in education.María Andrea Valles, Legal Director of Google Latin America and Canada, emphasized the ongoing challenge of preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce. To that end,Google is offering free one-year access to Google AI Pro for Mexican students from September 3rd to November 3rd. Furthermore,the Experience AI educational programme,a collaboration between Google Deepmind and the Raspberry Pi Foundation,is already underway as a pilot program in Veracruz,having benefited over 5,000 students and 200 teachers since its launch in early 2025. Google is adding $2 million in additional funding to continue this project. The company’s existing Google Career Certificates program has already aided over 29,500 young Mexicans since 2019,with plans to distribute 89,000 scholarships this year for career certificates and short AI courses through the Ministry of Public education (SEP).
Google is also targeting support for Mexican businesses. Marcos Westphalen, Director of Client Solutions at Google, introduced the Emprende Program with AI, aiming to impact over 100,000 SMEs across the country. Recognizing the importance of messaging platforms in the purchasing process - with 75% of Mexican businesses utilizing them – Google will launch Message Only ADS later this year to help companies convert online interactions into sales. To further assist businesses,particularly in the restaurant sector,Google will introduce Order buttons within Google Business Profiles,integrating with delivery services like rappi,Uber Eats,and Didi Food.
Artificial intelligence will also play a role in improving public services. Sofía Sanchez, Public Policies Manager and Government Relations at Google Mexico, highlighted AI’s potential to optimize transport, water management, and climate event planning. The Green Light project, currently collaborating with Nuevo León, is working to optimize traffic lights at 157 intersections. google Green Light technology is also being used for flood risk management, providing predictive models up to seven days in advance.A partnership with the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the National Meteorological Service (SMN) will implement Google’s early warning system.
Google’s infrastructure investment includes a new Cloud region in querétaro, projected to contribute over $11 billion to Mexico’s GDP by 2030, according to Julio velázquez, General Director of Google Cloud Mexico. Addressing concerns about talent leaving Mexico, Eduardo Bravo, Director of Engineering at Google, announced the creation of a Google engineering center of excellence, with plans to hire over 100 people through a specialized internship program over the next three years.
Adriana Noreña, Vice President of Google Latin America, confirmed Google’s continued expansion in Mexico, with plans to occupy additional floors in the Antara tower in Mexico City, reflecting the company’s growth within the country.
