Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – On February 19, 2026, Dominican President Luis Abinader signed an agreement with Google to construct a 7,000-square-meter international digital exchange hub in Santo Domingo, positioning the nation as a key node in regional data transmission.
The facility, Google’s eighth such port globally, will initially be connected to Google Cloud centers in South Carolina and Virginia via two new submarine fiber optic cables. Plans call for a total of four cables, increasing the Dominican Republic’s data transmission capacity tenfold and significantly reducing latency, according to details released by the Dominican government. Officials estimate the infrastructure will be capable of simultaneously streaming 17 billion high-definition videos.
Cristian Ramos, Google’s Director of Global Infrastructure, stated that commercial traffic to the Dominican Republic has increased by 500% over the past five years, underscoring the necessitate for expanded digital infrastructure. “We are at a key moment to realize the transformation and renewal of connectivity in the Dominican Republic,” Ramos said, adding that similar projects in other countries have yielded positive economic effects.
President Abinader emphasized the national importance of the project, stating it will enhance the speed, security, and resilience of the country’s digital network. “This digital exchange port will place the Dominican Republic at the center of the flow of information between North, Central, and South America,” he said. The Dominican government has established a working unit, led by the Ministry of the Presidency, to oversee the project’s implementation.
The agreement comes as the Dominican Republic’s existing network faces challenges. The country currently relies on six submarine cables, five of which are nearing the end of their operational lifespan. Abinader indicated his administration intends to leverage the improved connectivity to attract data centers, digital service companies, and technology developers, with the goal of creating specialized employment opportunities for Dominican youth.
Construction of the new infrastructure is scheduled to initiate in March 2026.
