Google Pixel 10 to Gain Compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – In a move challenging Apple’s walled-garden approach, google announced today that its upcoming Pixel 10 series will be able to directly share files with iPhones, iPads, and Macs using a system compatible with Apple’s AirDrop protocol. The functionality, developed independently by Google, allows for peer-to-peer file transfers without reliance on server intermediaries.
The new feature, detailed in a blog post, will initially be exclusive to the Pixel 10 generation, with plans for potential expansion to other Android devices. To initiate a transfer, Apple users must enable visibility for general device discovery with an automatic time limit, while Pixel 10 users will utilize the “Speedy Share” function to locate and connect with nearby Apple devices. The process works reciprocally, allowing Apple users to initiate transfers via AirDrop to receptive Pixel devices.
Google emphasizes the security of the system, stating that data is not routed through google servers, transfers are not logged, and no additional user details is collected. The technical implementation has been vetted by external security experts at NetSPI, with documentation available to address potential security concerns and preemptively respond to any objections from Apple.
“The key point here is that the connection is established directly between the devices,” Google stated in its security blog.
Currently, Apple has not issued an official statement regarding Google’s announcement. This development marks a significant step, as AirDrop has long been a feature uniquely available to Apple users.
