Google’s Pixel 10a is now available, entering a competitive mid-range smartphone market alongside devices like Samsung’s Galaxy S25 FE and the OnePlus 15R, according to recent reports.
The launch of the Pixel 10a has been met with mixed reactions, with some reviewers questioning whether the upgrade from the Pixel 9a is substantial enough to warrant a purchase. Digital Trends reported that the Pixel 10a delivers nearly identical core specifications to its predecessor, and in some areas, feels like a step backward. A key point of contention is Google’s decision to use the older Tensor G4 chip instead of the expected Tensor G5, marking the first time an A-series Pixel has launched without the newest processor.
Despite the concerns over the processor, the Pixel 10a offers a compact design, weighing 183 grams and measuring 153.9 x 73 x 9mm, a feature appealing to users seeking smaller, lighter phones. Android Authority noted What we have is a significant contrast to the increasing size of many modern smartphones.
The Galaxy S25 FE emerges as a key competitor. Android Authority’s initial assessment suggests the Pixel 10a may be a more sensible choice than Samsung’s Fan Edition, despite the S25 FE boasting a larger 120Hz display and a 50MP camera. Real-world pricing, particularly during sales, could make the S25 FE a more attractive option, according to Digital Trends.
The lack of Pixel Snap support in the 10a – a magnetic accessory ecosystem available on the Pixel 10 lineup – has also drawn criticism. This omission, coupled with the minimal hardware upgrades, has led some to question the value proposition of the new device.
A poll conducted by Android Authority indicates a close race between the two phones, with 49% of respondents favoring the Pixel 10a and 42% opting for the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE. The remaining 9% indicated a preference for other options.
GSMarena.com reported that deals on the Pixel 9a and Pixel 10 were temporarily paused to make way for the Pixel 10a’s release, suggesting an effort to position the new model as a key offering in the mid-range market.
