Google is rolling out new features for its Messages app aimed at enhancing functionality and security for Android users, according to reports. The updates focus on leveraging the RCS standard, improving message organization, and bolstering protection against spam and malicious links.
A key advancement is the full support for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) standard, bringing modern chat features to Android devices. RCS enables features commonly found in other messaging apps, such as read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality image sharing. For users with compatible devices, RCS is often enabled by default, accessible through the app’s settings under “Chats” then “RCS chats.” Notably, RCS communication is now possible with iPhone users running iOS 18 or later, though full complete-to-end encryption between the two platforms is still under development.
Beyond RCS, Google Messages offers tools to manage message clutter. Users can now pin critical conversations to the top of their inbox for uncomplicated access. A robust search function, complete with filters, allows users to quickly locate specific keywords or attachments within their message history. This feature is particularly useful for navigating large volumes of messages.
The app also introduces automated message management features. One-time employ passwords are automatically deleted after 24 hours, reducing the risk of sensitive information remaining stored on the device. Users can also schedule messages to be sent at a later time, a feature not currently available in WhatsApp. To schedule a message, users can long-press the send button to set a specific delivery time.
Security is a major focus, with Google Messages actively filtering messages containing potentially harmful links to fraudulent websites. Suspicious messages are moved to a blocked messages folder, protecting users from phishing attempts and malware. Users can also customize notification sounds for specific contacts, allowing them to quickly identify important messages from family members or colleagues.
Google Messages also offers a web application, allowing users to view and respond to messages from a computer or tablet, provided their phone remains connected to the internet. While the app’s interface may initially appear complex, users generally adapt to its features over time, recognizing its potential as a comprehensive messaging solution for Android devices.
