Google Meet Adds Built-In Timer to Curb Meeting Monopolies
Google Meet has launched a new timer feature designed to help keep online meetings focused and ensure equitable participation. The tool, now available on the computer version of Meet, allows hosts – or any participant, depending on settings – to set a duration for discussions, promoting efficient time management and balanced contributions.
According to Google’s official help guide, users can access the timer through the meeting tools menu, initiating, pausing, resuming, or extending the allotted time with a single click. Optional sound notifications alert participants when the timer expires.
The feature offers versatility through “host controls.” When enabled, only the meeting host and co-hosts can manage the timer. disabling host controls allows all participants to adjust the duration, making it suitable for collaborative or non-hierarchical environments.
google highlights the timer’s potential to improve productivity by providing a visible reminder of the group’s commitment to efficiency and enabling participants to self-regulate their speaking time. It can be especially useful in educational settings or brainstorming sessions, fostering more democratic time management.
The company also notes the function addresses a common social dynamic in virtual meetings – uneven participation – by introducing a visual cue that encourages self-control and digital courtesy. The timer aims to prevent individuals from dominating the conversation, ensuring all voices are heard.
