Google Joins Apple in Calling for Digital Market Act Adjustments
Brussels – Google is echoing Apple’s concerns regarding the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), arguing the legislation hinders innovation and negatively impacts both users and businesses. The company cites specific examples of how DMA enforcement is creating challenges across its services, from search to Android security.
Google points to changes in its travel search results as a key example. The DMA now requires Google to display links to intermediary services rather than direct links to airlines and hotels, resulting in a reported drop of up to 30 percent in direct booking traffic for providers. Google contends this ultimately leads to higher prices for consumers.
Security concerns on Android are also being raised. Google states the DMA necessitates the removal of established fraud and harmful link protections, given Android’s open nature and the availability of multiple app stores. The company is wary of external app stores introducing vulnerabilities, notably concerning payment systems outside of the Google Play Store – a point highlighted in a recent ruling related to Epic Games.
A significant obstacle, according to Google, is the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the DMA’s rules. This ambiguity is delaying the rollout of new products, particularly in the artificial intelligence sector, in Europe by as much as a year compared to other global markets. While Google has implemented changes like new data portability tools for European companies, numerous questions remain due to differing national regulations and ongoing legal challenges.
Google is urging the EU Commission to prioritize a user-focused, fact-based, and uniform approach to DMA enforcement, aiming to ensure European companies and consumers benefit from high-quality products and services.
