Google Expands Android Earthquake Alert System to Over 200 Countries and Regions
Android smartphone users across more than 200 countries and regions can now receive automated earthquake warnings designed to deliver alerts seconds before ground shaking begins, according to an announcement from Google.
The Android Earthquake Alerts System expands its geographical reach from 98 countries and regions to over 200, incorporating new territories such as Panama and Guatemala, as reported by Frandroid. France, alongside Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, and Saint-Barthélemy, already figures within the supported coverage zones, as noted by KultureGeek. Since its initial launch in 2021, the system has transmitted more than one billion notifications worldwide, according to company figures cited by Menow. Google announced this expansion on Thursday, October 15, 2026. In June 2026, Yossi Matias, head of Google Research, presented other group tools as part of a broader crisis resilience program, which includes flood forecasts up to seven days in advance for two billion people across more than 150 countries and wildfire tracking in 34 countries.

Smartphones Acting as Pocket Seismometers
The detection network relies on the miniature accelerometer chip embedded within standard Android devices. When an accelerometer detects sudden motion matching the signature of an earthquake, the device transmits a low-resolution location signal to Google servers, as detailed by Frandroid. The infrastructure aggregates signals from multiple nearby phones to verify the event, calculate its epicenter, and estimate its magnitude before dispatching warnings to users in the path of the destructive S-waves.
PhonAndroid notes that the warning system operates on a race against time, transmitting data faster than the physical movement of seismic waves. In regions such as California, Oregon, and Washington state, Android supplements this crowdsourced detection by distributing warnings sourced directly from the official ShakeAlert network, according to Menow. Users who prefer not to have their devices act as sensors for the network can disable Google Location Accuracy in their settings.
Upcoming Interface Upgrades
Google currently categorizes notifications into three distinct tiers based on proximity and perceived intensity. The “Be Aware” notification signals light shaking nearby, the “Be Ready” tier prepares users for stronger motion, and the “Take Action” alert triggers for immediate danger, as outlined by KultureGeek.
Boone Spooner, Group Product Manager for earthquake alerts at Google, announced in a company blog post covered by Frandroid that the intermediate “Be Ready” notifications will receive a significant design update in the coming months. The refreshed interface will display a map indicating the affected radius, an estimated magnitude, and specific safety actions, alongside a dedicated button to track developing information as new data becomes available.

Google Alert System Has Detection Limits and Errors
Google notes on its help page that the alert system has limitations, as it only concerns earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above, and not all events are detected, with magnitude estimations sometimes containing errors.
explains the firm regarding the upcoming interface updates.
