Google and The Dalles, Oregon, Announce Completion of Landmark Water Storage System
The dalles, Oregon – A new aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) system is now operational in The Dalles, Oregon, significantly bolstering the city’s water capacity for years to come. The project, completed in partnership with Google, represents a substantial investment in the region’s water infrastructure and drought resilience.
The ASR system, detailed in Google’s sustainability report, functions much like a savings account for water. It captures and stores excess water during the rainy season, preventing it from being lost as runoff. This stored water is then readily available during drier periods, providing a crucial buffer against drought conditions.
This initiative is part of Google’s broader commitment to Oregon, where the company operates data centers powering popular services like Cloud, Maps, Workspace, and YouTube. These facilities deliver AI-powered technologies to users worldwide.
In a significant move demonstrating long-term commitment to the community,Google has permanently transferred full ownership of the ASR system and its associated groundwater rights to the City of The Dalles. this transfer provides the city with an additional 100 million gallons of water annually for public benefit.
“This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to sustainability,” said a City of The Dalles representative. “The ASR system will be an invaluable asset in ensuring a reliable water supply for our residents and businesses for decades to come.”
The completion of this system underscores Google’s dedication to responsible water stewardship and its role as a community partner in Oregon.
