God of War Spin-off Surprises with US Success | Lente.lv
A surprisingly affordable new installment in the God of War franchise, God of War: Sons of Sparta, has achieved unexpected success following its release on February 12th, according to reports. The 2D action platformer, available for PlayStation 5, is priced at $30 for the standard edition and $40 for the “Digital Deluxe” version.
Developed by Santa Monica Studio in collaboration with Mega Cat Studios, Sons of Sparta revisits the early years of Kratos, focusing on his training alongside his brother Deimos within the Spartan Agoge. Players control Kratos as he battles enemies utilizing his signature weapons – spear and shield – as well as “Olimpa dāvanas,” or “Olympian gifts,” according to promotional materials.
The release of Sons of Sparta coincides with Sony’s announcement of a full remake of the original God of War trilogy (2005, 2007, and 2010). This remake project is currently in its early stages of development, with Santa Monica Studio emphasizing a commitment to deliver a “grand” experience, though no gameplay details or release date have been disclosed. T.S. Karson, who voiced Kratos in the original Greek mythology-based games, will reprise his role for the remake.
The announcement of both Sons of Sparta and the trilogy remake occurred during a February “State of Play” presentation, marking the franchise’s 20th anniversary. The God of War franchise, created by David Jaffe, began on the PlayStation 2 in 2005 and has since become a flagship series for PlayStation, encompassing ten installments across multiple platforms. The series transitioned to Norse mythology with the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War and its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
While God of War Ragnarök is currently listed as unavailable for purchase through dateks.lv, with no confirmed date for restocking, the release of Sons of Sparta provides a new entry point for fans of the franchise. Prices for various God of War titles on PlayStation 5 currently range from 17€ to 55€ across Latvian online retailers, according to KurPirkt.lv.
