Santa Monica Studio, the development team behind the critically acclaimed God of War franchise, is targeting a 2027 release for a new AAA game spearheaded by creative director Cory Barlog, according to multiple industry insiders.
The project, which has been in development for several years, was discussed in reports from Push Square and Khel Now, with both outlets citing information from industry commentators Shinobi602 and Nate the Hate. Even as details remain scarce, sources indicate the game is intended to “feel” like a new intellectual property, despite potentially being built within an existing PlayStation franchise.
Development of this new title is proceeding alongside the ongoing function on a recently announced God of War trilogy remake, allowing Santa Monica Studio to operate with a multi-team structure. Barlog transitioned from directing God of War Ragnarök to lead this separate team after Eric Williams took the directorial role for the sequel.
Initial speculation suggested a science-fiction setting or a storyline focused on Atreus, the son of Kratos, but recent reports indicate those ideas have been dismissed. The game is not expected to be a sci-fi title, according to sources.
A reveal of the project is anticipated in Summer 2026, potentially during a PlayStation State of Play event or as part of the Summer Game Fest, according to Nate the Hate. Shinobi602 indicated on ResetEra that a 2027 release is likely, “barring any delays.”
Santa Monica Studio has a history of focusing on single, large-scale projects, but recent expansion suggests a broadening of development efforts. The studio’s current workload includes the God of War trilogy remakes and Barlog’s new project, with the latter expected to be a significant release for the PlayStation 5 in 2027.
