NYU Shanghai Launches New Global China Studies Minor, Reflecting China’s Rising Global Influence
Shanghai, China – As China’s role on the world stage continues too expand, NYU Shanghai is responding with a new interdisciplinary minor in Global China Studies. The program, announced today, aims to equip students with the nuanced understanding and critical skills necesary to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world increasingly shaped by China’s influence.
Beyond conventional area studies, the Global China studies minor offers a holistic approach, examining China’s interactions with the globe and internal trends across individual, societal, state, and global levels. The curriculum will delve into the socio-economic,religious,cultural,and political transformations occurring within China and their reverberations internationally.
“China is no longer simply a regional power; it’s a defining force in the 21st century,” says the program’s Area Head, an Assistant Professor of Global China Studies. “This minor is designed to provide students with the tools to analyze and understand this dynamic, and to prepare them for careers in a world where knowledge of China is increasingly vital.”
Minor Requirements:
The 16-credit minor requires students to complete the following:
* Foundational Course (4 credits): Students choose between GCHN-SHU 110: The Concept of China, or another designated “China and the World” course.
* Electives (12 credits): Four Global China Studies electives, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests.
* Language Flexibility: Students can fulfill up to two elective credits with advanced or post-advanced language courses.
