Giants Claim Kick Returner xavier Gipson Off Waivers

The New york Giants have claimed kick returner Xavier Gipson ⁣off waivers from the⁢ New York Jets, ⁤the team announced Wednesday.Gipson is already ⁢familiar with⁢ MetLife Stadium, having played his first two NFL seasons with the jets.

The move comes after the Giants utilized wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson as their kick ‍returner in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, a decision that raised concerns given Robinson’s importance too the offense. Robinson⁢ averaged 20.5 yards on two kick return attempts but faces increased injury risk⁣ as a primary receiver in multiple formations.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn stated that the decision to ⁣release gipson “was not a rash decision,” and “thay⁤ are never based ⁤off of one ⁣incident.” He added, “Xavier is a really good player and he’s going to play in this league, but I thought it was time for us ‌to move on in another direction.”

Gipson provides a dedicated return specialist for the Giants, with a career punt return average of 8.9 yards, including a 65-yard ⁤touchdown return in overtime against the Buffalo Bills in 2023. This addition allows the ⁣Giants to protect Robinson and utilize Gipson’s return⁤ abilities.
