Giants Claim Kick Returner xavier Gipson Off Waivers
The New york Giants have claimed kick returner Xavier Gipson off waivers from the New York Jets, the team announced Wednesday.Gipson is already familiar with MetLife Stadium, having played his first two NFL seasons with the jets.
The move comes after the Giants utilized wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson as their kick returner in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, a decision that raised concerns given Robinson’s importance too the offense. Robinson averaged 20.5 yards on two kick return attempts but faces increased injury risk as a primary receiver in multiple formations.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn stated that the decision to release gipson “was not a rash decision,” and “thay are never based off of one incident.” He added, “Xavier is a really good player and he’s going to play in this league, but I thought it was time for us to move on in another direction.”
Gipson provides a dedicated return specialist for the Giants, with a career punt return average of 8.9 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown return in overtime against the Buffalo Bills in 2023. This addition allows the Giants to protect Robinson and utilize Gipson’s return abilities.
