German pension insurance to auto-project income without consent from 2027
Automatic Pension Projections Set for 2027
Starting January 1, 2027, the German statutory pension insurance system will calculate retirement benefits using income projections without requiring explicit consent from the applicant, futurezone.de reported. The regulatory shift removes a procedural hurdle that has historically forced retiring workers to choose between timely pension payments and capturing late-career bonuses or special payments.
The Trade-Offs of the Current Framework
Under the current framework, retiring employees must decide whether the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) can extrapolate their final months of earnings. Because employer salary reports often lag behind the retirement application date, the agency estimates recent income using the preceding twelve months. Workers who grant permission receive their payments promptly, but sacrifice any subsequent bonuses or holiday pay that arrive right before retirement. Those who withhold consent avoid missing out on higher lifetime benefits, yet face delayed initial pension payouts while waiting for final wage reports.
Eliminating the Signature Requirement
The upcoming legislative adjustment under the SGB-VI adjustment act eliminates this signature requirement entirely. For any retirement claim beginning on or after January 1, 2027, the DRV will perform the income projection automatically.
Pension Office Automatically Increases Monthly Benefits for Higher Actual Earnings
Automatic recalculation changes how late-career wage increases affect final payouts. If post-projection data reveals higher actual earnings than initially estimated, the pension office will automatically adjust the monthly benefit upward without requiring a secondary filing. Conversely, if actual earnings drop below the projected baseline, the initial calculation stands as a floor. The monthly pension cannot decrease as a result of the automated projection.
Workers Must Submit Pension Applications Three Months Before Retirement
Securing these protections requires strict adherence to submission deadlines. The DRV recommends filing pension applications approximately three months prior to the intended retirement date. Workers targeting a January 1, 2027 start date should have submitted their paperwork by early October 2026.
Scope and Limitations for Existing Retirees
While the reform simplifies procedures for future claimants, it leaves existing retirees unaffected. Individuals drawing statutory pensions prior to 2027 will not receive automatic retroactive adjustments under this rule.
