Former Prosecutor Claims Pressure Campaign, Denies Involvement in Controversial Case
Budapest – Gergely Kovács, a former prosecutor, publicly stated he was targeted by a campaign to discredit him, but insists he was never given the opportunity to participate in a high-profile case currently under scrutiny. His comments come amid growing public debate surrounding the handling of sensitive legal matters and allegations of political interference within the Hungarian justice system.
Kovács alleges that individuals connected to the case actively sought to damage his reputation, fearing his potential involvement. He specifically claimed that certain parties where “afraid of Gergő,” suggesting they believed his participation would jeopardize their positions. He further asserted that these individuals were motivated by a desire to protect their jobs.
While details of the specific case remain limited, Kovács indicated that potential areas of concern were highlighted in several parts of the related reporting. He did not elaborate on the nature of these concerns or the identities of those allegedly involved in the pressure campaign.
Kovács served as a prosecutor within the Budapest Regional Prosecutor’s Office from 2010 to 2019, specializing in economic crimes. He left the prosecutor’s office to pursue a career in the private sector, working as a legal consultant for several firms. The current controversy centers on a case involving alleged financial irregularities within a company linked to a prominent businessman, istván Szabó, and a real estate development project in the 5th district of Budapest.
