Gerardo Seoane misses match after inner ear condition

October 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

BSC Young Boys head coach Gerardo Seoane missed his side’s 2–0 victory over FC St. Gallen on October 24, 2026, after being hospitalized the previous day with an inner ear condition known as vestibular neuritis, Blick reported.

Inner Ear Inflammation Leaves Manager Unable to Stand

The 47-year-old manager fell ill with severe dizziness and nausea shortly before the Super League fixture. According to Blick, the diagnosis confirmed an inflammation of the vestibular nerve in the inner ear, which regulates spatial orientation and balance. Seoane reported that the sensory dysfunction left him unable to stand upright. He spent Friday in the hospital before being discharged on Saturday afternoon to continue his recovery at home in Hergiswil, as noted by Plattform J.

Team Connects with Manager via Video Call After Win

Assistant coach Matteo Vanetta stepped in to lead the team from the sidelines during the 2–0 win over St. Gallen, as covered by 20 Minuten. Striker Christian Fassnacht told 20 Minuten that the sudden medical emergency was an initial shock for the squad, emphasizing that player and staff concern focused entirely on the coach’s health rather than the fixture itself. Berner Zeitung reported that after the final whistle, the team connected via video call to their manager’s home, where Seoane watched the match and maintained SMS contact with the coaching staff throughout the 90 minutes. In response to the victory, Seoane rewarded the squad with an extra day off.

Return to the Sidelines

Seoane noted in a club video published by Blick that while he recovered well over the weekend, sensory overload and processing information still induce fatigue, requiring him to scale back his workload temporarily. Despite needing to manage his recovery, the manager confirmed he will return to the technical area for the upcoming match against FC Zürich.
