Georgia Social Media Age Verification law Blocked by Federal Judge – What You Need too Know
Atlanta, GA – June 27, 2025 – A federal judge has blocked Georgia’s recently passed law requiring age verification for social media accounts, citing First amendment concerns. This makes georgia the ninth state to see such legislation halted by the courts.
U.S.District Judge Amy Totenberg issued a preliminary injunction Thursday, preventing the law – which was set to take effect next week – from being enforced until a full ruling on its constitutionality is delivered. The law would have mandated social media providers to verify user ages using “commercially reasonable” methods and require parental consent for users under 16.Why Was the Law Blocked?
Judge Totenberg found the Georgia law infringes upon free speech rights, restricting both the rights of minors and the ability to engage in anonymous speech online. The ruling asserts the law also limits the public’s access to information shared on social media platforms.
