Kaizer Chiefs Extend George matlou’s Contract, Add Khanyiso Mayo to Squad
JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer chiefs have confirmed a one-year contract extension for midfielder George Matlou, defying speculation that the 27-year-old would be among the players departing the club. The announcement comes as Amakhosi bolster their squad with the loan signing of forward Khanyiso Mayo.
Matlou, who joined the Soweto giants from Swallows in 2022, has seen limited game time, making only 41 appearances in three seasons, including a single league appearance last season. Despite this, and a meaningful player cull between May and July that saw nearly ten players released, the club has opted to retain Matlou’s services.
His representatives, Mscsports Talent, confirmed the extension on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “George Matlou commits to the journey! ✍️ The midfielder extends his stay with the Amakhosi.”
Mayo Arrives at Naturena
The contract extension for Matlou is paired with the exciting arrival of Khanyiso Mayo, who joins Kaizer Chiefs on loan from Algerian side CR belouizdad. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. expressed the club’s long-held interest in the player.
“It’s no secret that we wanted to bring khanyisa to Naturena before his move to Algeria,” Motaung Jr. said. “he has a proven track record in the league, and we believe he will add significant value to the squad this season when we play in the league, as well as on the continent. He joins a select group of athletes who’ve made their families proud by following in their footsteps. We are truly happy to have him here and wish him all the best.”
Looking Ahead
Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to integrate Mayo quickly as they prepare to face Sekhukhune United in their next league fixture. The question remains whether Matlou will be able to break into the first team this season, despite the contract extension.
