Developments in Gaza and the west Bank – August 29, 2023
Recent events in Gaza and the West Bank continue to raise concerns regarding journalist safety, civilian casualties, and potential shifts in Israeli policy.
Journalist Safety & Calls for Examination:
A petition with 100 signatures, spearheaded by Italian MEP Pierfrancesco Ruotolo and co-signed by Nicola zingaretti, head of the Democratic Party delegation at the European Parliament, has been presented to representatives of the Union of Palestinian Journalists. The petition calls for a European Parliament resolution to address the targeting of journalists in Gaza, referencing incidents at the IFA Hospital and the Al-Nasser medical complex in Khan Younis on August 25th, where a total of ten journalists lost their lives. Zingaretti stated that European inaction stems from a reluctance of many European governments to move beyond statements. ruotolo emphasized that attacks on journalists undermine the right to know the truth and called for a commission of investigation and international protection mechanisms for reporters working in the region. He also voiced support for a planned “reporter boat” initiative organized by the Union of Palestinian Journalists to reach Gaza.
Civilian casualties in Khan Younis:
An Israeli drone strike in the Al-mawasi area, near Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, has resulted in at least 11 deaths, including seven children. palestinian sources report the victims were waiting in line to obtain water when they were targeted. the Civil Protection of Gaza described the area as previously designated “safe.”
Potential west Bank Annexation:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened a meeting to discuss the possibility of applying sovereignty over parts of the West Bank and implementing measures against the Palestinian Authority. This action is reportedly in response to recent recognition of palestinian statehood by France and other countries. The meeting, initially scheduled for today, is now set for Thursday. The scope of potential annexation remains unclear, with discussions centering on whether it would encompass all Israeli settlements, specific areas like the Jordan Valley, or involve a longer legislative process. Such a move is anticipated to draw widespread condemnation from Palestinians, Arab nations, and Western countries. Discussions regarding the matter were reportedly held between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during sa’ar’s recent visit to Washington.
