Gasparri says Trump’s Iran policy and defeats harm his standing
Electoral Setbacks and Iran Policy Draw Italian Senate Scrutiny
Electoral defeats and a failed military campaign in Iran have damaged Donald Trump’s political standing, according to Italian Senate Foreign Affairs Committee President Maurizio Gasparri, who spoke on the La7 program Coffee Break. Gasparri stated that Trump’s campaign slogan promising to make America great again has failed to materialize through the intervention in Iran, disappointing a large portion of the American electorate and leading to current electoral defeats.
The Italian lawmaker pointed to what he described as bizarre and contradictory attitudes from the American president, which have prompted the Italian government to voice explicit dissent. Gasparri recalled that Rome pushed back against Trump regarding Greenland, attacks on the Pope, and tariff policies, noting that Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani even canceled scheduled visits by Italian representatives in response.
Alliances Beyond Administrations
Gasparri addressed the broader geopolitical implications of the Iranian conflict, asserting that Italy cannot defend an obscurantist regime that feeds terrorism and massacres its own citizens. At the same time, he maintained that the historic and strategic alliance between Europe and the United States must endure regardless of who occupies the White House, whether a Clinton, Bush, Reagan, or Trump.
The Forza Italia senator argued that Trump has created conditions favoring a defeat for the Republican Party, noting that Trump never fully integrated into a party whose traditional classical politics are better represented by figures like Reagan or Bush. Gasparri remarked that if he were an American voter choosing between Kamala Harris and Trump, he would have chosen Trump while still preferring a standard-bearer of traditional American conservatism.
