Donated Water Resold Online After drought Relief in Gangneung
Gangneung, South Korea – A controversy has emerged in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, following reports of donated bottled water being offered for sale on second-hand trading websites. The situation unfolded after the city was declared a disaster area due too a severe drought and received ample bottled water donations for its citizens.
Gangneung City distributed bottled water to residents on two occasions. In mid-September, each apartment resident received three 6-bottle cases of 2-liter bottles, while other citizens received two cases each. A prior distribution round provided 6 bottles of 2 liters per person. Additional supplies were also provided to social welfare facilities, hospitals, university students living away from home, foreign students and workers, daycare centers, and small business owners operating for less than 24 months.
The reselling activity appears to have begun around September 19th, after rainfall increased water levels in the obong Reservoir and the disaster declaration was lifted. Online listings varied in price, with six 2-liter cases selling for between 2,000 and 3,600 won, depending on the brand and quantity. While some sellers claimed to be reselling water purchased in advance, manny listings are believed to involve donated supplies.
“They are great people,” lamented one citizen, identified as ‘A’,”but it’s a warm heart sent by the whole people, and if it were me,I would share it with those who need it.”
Conversely, many residents expressed a willingness to share excess water. One citizen stated, “It’s 30 2ℓ bottled water that was distributed, but we don’t need it, so we share it,” adding, “If you need it, please bring it comfortably.” These offers for free distribution were quickly met with demand, according to reports.
