Landover, MD – Washington Commanders punter Tress way is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, though the team anticipates he will play. The Commanders also have defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. questionable for the matchup.
Way has been managing a back injury sustained during the Week 1 game against the new York Giants. While he didn’t participate in Monday’s walkthrough, he was able to kick on both Tuesday and Wednesday. To provide a contingency plan on the short week, Washington signed veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky to the practice squad.
“The concern is lower for us now, but like most things, [we] just try to always protect the team and make the decisions,” head coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday. “He hit the ball well today, so we signed Mitch and on a short week, [it was] just the right decision to go that way. But we expect Tress to do well.”
Wishnowsky, originally a fourth-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2019, has appeared in 92 career games. He has punted 310 times for 14,142 yards, allowing 1,042 return yards. He’s recorded 20 touchbacks and 138 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Wise Jr. is dealing with a knee injury. He was a full participant in Monday’s and Tuesday’s practices but was limited on Wednesday.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels and defensive tackle Daron Payne, among others on Washington’s injury report, are expected to be available for Thursday’s game.
