Recognizing the depth at the tight end position and recalling his high school defensive experience, he decided to make a change. Initially playing middle linebacker before shifting to the outside, Cooper quickly worked to prove he possessed the necessary edge for defensive play. Injury Setback and Recovery Process
The momentum of Cooper’s career faced a major hurdle during the opening game of the 2025 season against No. 19 Texas A&M, when he suffered a season-ending injury after making a tackle. “The first thing I said was ‘Why me?’ I think every athlete that’s had an injury like that, that’s the first question,” Cooper noted. Following surgery on the day of the Texas State game, he relied on the resilience of his teammates for motivation. Despite being sidelined, he maintained an active presence by supporting his teammates remotely during away games and encouraging them through the recovery period.
Leadership Evolution and the No. 1 Jersey
Through observing veteran leaders such as Frank Harris, Rashad Wisdom, JT Clark, Owen McCown, Owen Pewee, and Jamal Ligon, Cooper developed his own leadership style. Reflecting the program’s core motto of Ubuntu—meaning “I am because we are”—Cooper’s perseverance earned him selection by his teammates and coaches to wear the No. 1 jersey for the 2026 season. “Once I heard I got that number, I felt a lot of pride because the team sees me like that,” Cooper said, noting that the honor reinforces his commitment to high standards as he returns to the field.
