French students hold nationwide protests Oct 6 for better school conditions
Hundreds of thousands of students and supporters joined nationwide protests across France on October 6, 2026, barricading school entrances to demand better teaching staff, updated facilities, and relief from extreme summer heatwaves. The interior ministry estimated 250,000 participants, while organizers placed the figure at nearly double that count.
High school access has faced blockades since mid-September. Protesters cite a deepening socio-economic divide, underfunded suburban schools, and harsh daily timetables as core grievances driving the ongoing student mobilization.

In the working-class outer suburbs, participants highlighted that most high school structures date back to the 1970s without adequate modernization.
Police Crackdown Causes Thousands of Arrests and Injuries
The government directed law enforcement to prevent urban violence and reopen institutions using intermediary non-lethal weapons, resulting in significant injuries and arrests. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated on Tuesday that 215 students, 85 teaching staff, and 715 police officers had sustained injuries during the unrest. More than 5,000 individuals have faced arrest since the mid-September onset, with minors making up the vast majority. Incidents during the crackdown included a 14-year-old boy suffering a fractured jaw and tooth loss from a point-blank tear gas grenade, a 15-year-old in Lens losing his hand to a sting-ball grenade, and a 16-year-old in Tours losing the use of his right eye.

Trade union representatives and educators voiced sharp criticism regarding the police response.
Marches Converge on Place de la République
Security forces dismantled barricades at the Lycée Hélène Boucher in eastern Paris, pushing remaining demonstrators toward the Place de la Nation before crowds regrouped for a march toward the Place de la République. Participants moved past Père Lachaise cemetery while motorists sounded horns in rhythm with student chants. Police squads periodically intercepted marchers to search backpacks and confiscate items such as saline solution used for tear gas exposure. Upon reaching the Place de la République, the atmosphere shifted as university students, parents, and teachers converged behind banners reading High school and university students: we want to study, not get clubbed
ahead of the 2027 presidential vote.
