Drone Strike Injures Dozens on Train in Sumy Region, Ukraine
Sumy, Ukraine – A Russian drone strike hit a passenger train in the Sumy region of northeastern ukraine on Friday, injuring approximately thirty people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced.The attack underscores the continued threat to civilian infrastructure as the conflict enters its second year.
The incident occurred as the train was traveling through the region, a frequent target of russian shelling and drone attacks. zelenskyy stated the number of injured is currently estimated around thirty,with medical assistance being provided to those affected.Details regarding the severity of the injuries are still emerging.
This attack follows the recent death of French photojournalist antoni Lallican, 37, who was killed by a drone strike in Donbass, Ukraine, on October 3rd, according to the National Union of Journalists (SNJ). the Fej-Fij, European and international federations of journalists, “Condemn this war crime and call on the authorities to open an inquiry to identify those responsible.” It marks the first reported instance of a journalist killed by a drone in Ukraine. Ukrainian journalist george Ivanchenko was also injured in the same attack while reporting alongside Lallican. Both journalists were wearing protective equipment, including bulletproof vests marked with “press.”
Lallican had been reporting in Ukraine for Le monde since the start of the conflict in February 2022, and had previously covered Syria. His death brings the total number of journalists killed in Ukraine since the Russian invasion to seventeen, including four French nationals: Antoni Lallican, Tetyana Kulyk, Ryan Evans Renaud, frédéric Leclerc-IMHOFF, Ihor Hudenko, Maks Levin, Mantas Kvedaravicius, Oksana Baulina, oleksandra Kuvshinova, Pierre Zakrzewski, Roman Nezandra Yevheniy sakun, and Zoreslav Zamoysky.
