Freddie Mercury’s Last Live Performance Jacket Headed to Auction

September 1, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The cropped leather biker jacket worn by rock legend Freddie Mercury during his final live singing performance in front of an audience goes on sale at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, on September 5, with an estimated price of up to £150,000.

The Final Stage Appearance and Musical Context

Mercury made the appearance in support of the Terrence Higgins Trust during a special charity performance of Time The Musical, which starred Cliff Richard. The ambitious West End production mixed rock anthems, visual effects, and an epic narrative about a musician hurled into the future and put on trial by an intergalactic court holding humanity’s fate in its hands. Mercury accepted the invitation out of admiration for the project and his commitment to charitable causes, delivering a powerful four-song set that included “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “In My Defence,” “Time,” and a duet with Cliff Richard on “It’s In Every One Of Us.”

The garment itself originates from the Jean Paul Gaultier 1987/88 Rock Stars collection. Alongside the jacket, the auction lot includes letters from AIDSTakeCare International and from the daughter of actress Barbara Valentin, who had originally been given the jacket by Mercury.

Auction Valuation and Provenance Details

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge outlined the historical significance of the piece ahead of the September 5 sale. The auctioneer noted that while Mercury did appear on stage later that year with Montserrat Caballé to perform “Barcelona,” that performance was lip-synced. The Dominion Theatre performance stood as his final live vocal swan song before his death three years later at age 45 from bronchial pneumonia, a complication of AIDS.

When high-value cultural assets and historic stage wardrobe pieces transition from private collections to public auction blocks, managing the logistics, provenance verification, and secure transfer requires specialized oversight.

Preserving Rock History

The impending sale places a tangible piece of music history back into the public discourse, highlighting the enduring brand equity and cultural footprint left by Queen’s frontman decades after his passing. As collectors and institutions prepare for the Devizes auction, the market for authenticated rock and roll memorabilia remains fiercely competitive.
