Former German international footballer Frank Mill has died at teh age of 68, following a heart attack suffered in May. Mill, known for a memorable missed opportunity against Bayern munich and a bronze medal at the 1988 seoul Olympics, passed away leaving behind his daughter Vanessa, son kevin, and foster son Max.
Mill enjoyed a prolific career primarily within the german football leagues. Before gaining prominence, he played in the second tier of German football until 1981. A standout season saw him become the top scorer with 40 goals, earning him a transfer to Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach. He spent three seasons with Mönchengladbach before an eight-year stint at Borussia Dortmund, concluding his professional career at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Mill represented the German national team, earning a bronze medal at the 1988 summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. His career included a notable, albeit frustrating, moment against Poland during European qualifying rounds, where he scored a late equalizer that denied Poland a potential spot in the tournament.
Despite being part of the German squad that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Mill did not feature in any matches during the tournament. He is perhaps best remembered for a remarkable incident during a 1986/1987 match against Bayern Munich. After successfully rounding Bayern goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, Mill inexplicably shot wide of the open goal, hitting the post. He later reflected on the moment, attributing it to a lapse in composure, stating, “I panicked.”
Mill suffered a heart attack in May while traveling from Milan-Malpensa Airport and had been hospitalized since. His passing marks the end of a career defined by both success and unforgettable moments within German football history.
