Lithuanian Basketball Star Receives Outpouring of Support Following Racist Abuse, Eyes Strong National Team Future
Vilnius, Lithuania – august 17, 2025 – Lithuanian national basketball team member Sylvainas Francisco has spoken publicly about the wave of support he received after being targeted with racist messages online, while also expressing confidence in the team’s current trajectory and reaffirming a key in-game decision. The outpouring of solidarity, particularly from his wife and fellow players, has bolstered Francisco as Lithuania competes on the international stage.
The incident underscores a growing concern regarding online harassment of athletes and the critical role of community support in combating prejudice. francisco’s experience highlights the challenges faced by diverse athletes and the importance of platforms taking stronger action against abusive behavior. His comments come as Lithuania looks ahead with optimism, fueled by a new generation of players and a renewed sense of purpose.
Francisco emphasized the encouraging nature of the messages he received, singling out the support of his wife as particularly meaningful. “All of them were encouraging, especially from my wife,” he stated. “Many friends shared my message, sent me messages. Thank you very much for this because it means a lot to me. Sometimes you feel lonely, but there are a lot of people around you who support. I never thought it would happen, but it was fun that other people made me smile.Very good feeling.”
During a recent game,Francisco made a strategic decision to intentionally score points to surpass teammate Luke Dončius in the scoring tally,a move he addressed directly. “Yes, due to the difference in points. Luka pressed my hand. That was the onyl thing I apologized for. But I told him I would throw on the difference in points. I would do it too, but the only thing I regret is to press the hand.”
Despite the support received, Francisco expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of current social media policies in curbing racism. “I don’t think [social media is doing enough],” he said.”People create many fake instagram profiles. I hope they do something so we can find their address, identity and so we can stop.”
Looking forward, Francisco remains optimistic about Lithuania’s prospects.”We came to fight and know what we play for. This is a new generation and we are doing well,” he affirmed, signaling a determined mindset as the team continues its competitive journey.
