Francesco Totti Honored with Piano Composition at Chigiana Festival
Francesco Totti is the subject of a contemporary minimalist composition written for six pianos at the Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy 2026. Set for August 24 at Siena’s Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, the performance translates the former Roma captain’s athletic legacy into precise rhythmic structures.
Translating Athletic IP into Minimalist Composition
British composer Graham Fitkin crafted the piece, titled simply “Totti,” as an authentic musical portrait rather than a novelty act. The score channels the former number 10’s signature agility, lightness, and historic club loyalty into repetitive, interlocking musical patterns. Fitkin, recognized as a prominent figure in English minimalism and a former pupil of Louis Andriessen, structured the work so that no single pianist acts as a traditional soloist. Instead, the six instruments pass rhythmic pulses back and forth across the stage, a deliberate nod to a fluid team passing sequence on the football field.
The Chigiana Keyboard Ensemble Program and Venue Logistics
The performance begins at 21.15 in the solemn architectural space of the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, where the Chigiana Keyboard Ensemble—coordinated by Luigi Pecchia—will arrange the six pianos across the historic floor. Beyond Fitkin’s tribute, the concert program anchors itself in major contemporary and historical milestones. It features Hans Werner Henze’s “Serenata notturna” to mark the composer’s centenary, alongside Darius Milhaud’s “Suite Paris” and Adrian Sutton’s “Aerobatics over Lake Wanaka.” The evening also showcases three absolute world premieres commissioned directly by the Accademia Chigiana, written by Marco Quagliarini, Thomas Desi, and Fabrizio De Rossi Re.

Prior to the main concert, the Palazzo Chigi Saracini courtyard hosts a cultural discussion titled “Once you go Bach” at 18.00, featuring composer and conductor Carlo Boccadoro in dialogue with Stefano Jacoviello. Established in Siena in 1932, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana continues to function as a global hub for advanced musical training, drawing student performers and composers worldwide to its annual summer academy.
