molinari Recalls “chaos” and Pride of Europe’s Historic 2012 Ryder Cup Comeback
MEDINAH, IL – Francesco Molinari vividly remembers the intense pressure and ultimate triumph of Europe’s stunning comeback at the 39th Ryder Cup in 2012, a victory often dubbed the ”Miracle at Medinah.” Reflecting on the event,Molinari described the experience as both “wracking and…a nice feeling.”
Playing against a formidable American team, including Tiger Woods, Molinari focused on maintaining composure. “For me personally, especially playing against Tiger, it was just about staying in the game as long as possible,” he said. “You’re just trying not to give away any holes, play solid golf and take it to the last few holes.”
Europe needed 14 points to retain the Ryder cup trophy, and Martin Kaymer secured the crucial point with a five-foot par putt against Steve Stricker. Though, the overall victory ultimately fell to Molinari, sealed when woods bogeyed the final green, giving Europe a historic 14-13 win.
“It was complete chaos,” Molinari recalled.Unsure whether a tie would suffice, he confirmed with captain José María Olazábal that he needed to continue playing. “everything around us was just going off with the European celebrations, the Americans being deflated and spectators starting to leave the course. It was a surreal finish. I was obviously very happy to see Martin hole that putt.”
The comeback held deep emotional significance, serving as a tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011. “I like to think that he [Ballesteros] was part of what happened that Sunday,” Molinari stated. “Every time you wear the shirt, he is the first guy that comes to your mind.” He emphasized Olazábal’s role in honoring Ballesteros’ legacy, stating, “He still is the best person possible to convey Seve’s message…and that is what makes the European Ryder Cup teams so special. Wearing that shirt just gives you goosebumps every time.”
Molinari will return to the Ryder Cup as a vice captain alongside Olazábal at bethpage Black in New York later this month, supporting Luke Donald’s team as they aim for another historic victory.
