France Prepare for Stern Test Against Rising South Africa in Rugby World Cup clash
AUCKLAND – France and South Africa are set to meet in a pivotal Rugby World Cup fixture, with France entering as firm favourites but wary of a South African side demonstrating notable progress. The match promises a compelling contest of contrasting styles, with France relying on agility and South Africa aiming to disrupt through physicality.
France co-head coach Gaëlle Mignot acknowledged the growing threat posed by South Africa, recalling a fiercely competitive training session during the 2025 Six Nations. “They were steadfast, had a message to send, and wanted to make a statement,” Mignot said. “They made it clear South Africa had come to this World Cup to show how much they’ve progressed… and are aiming for the quarter-finals.”
Recent encounters favour France, having secured victories in both previous meetings: 40-5 at the 2021 Rugby World Cup and 46-3 in a November 2021 amiable. However, mignot cautioned against complacency, stating, “A lot has changed since then.”
France will look to exploit thier lighter build with a dynamic, mobile game plan, as outlined by co-captain Manae Feleu: “We’ll need to move a lot and hold on over the long haul… We absolutely can’t let up – the match lasts 80 minutes.”
South Africa, meanwhile, have opted for team rotation following their victory over Italy, prioritizing player welfare. Head coach swys de Bruin emphasized the importance of giving all squad members an opportunity to feature in the tournament. “The World Cup means everything to the 32 players,” he stated, “and the last thing I would have done is left here and some of them didn’t ever run on that pitch.”
Key to South Africa’s forward effort will be number eight Aseza Hele, who retains her starting position, highlighting her importance to the team. Captain Babalwa latsha expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the side, viewing it as “a vote of confidence.” She affirmed her focus on team success, stating, “My job is simple: to play the best rugby possible and to contribute to the team’s success as best as I can.”
