Global Leaders Gather for Singapore’s SG60 Jubilee
Dignitaries from Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia Attend National Day Parade
Singapore is set to host esteemed leaders from three neighboring nations at the National Day Parade (NDP) on August 9th, marking the Republic’s 60th year of independence. This significant occasion underscores the deep-rooted friendships and shared heritage that bind Singapore with its closest partners.
Royal and Presidential Attendance
Among the distinguished guests gracing the Padang are His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and his consort, along with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail, and Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Zahid Hamidi, who represents Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will also be in attendance.
Symbol of Enduring Ties
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) expressed Singapore’s honor at the presence of these dignitaries. A spokesperson stated, “Singapore is honoured by the presence of dignitaries from our closest neighbours at our milestone celebration. Their attendance underscores our shared geographic and historical ties, and reflects the enduring strength of our friendships.”
Manpower Minister Dr. Tan See Leng warmly welcomed Sultan Bolkiah and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha upon their arrival at Changi Airport on August 8th. Dr. Tan highlighted on Facebook that their visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, signifies the “close, warm and longstanding friendship between Brunei and Singapore.”
First Foreign Dignitary Influx Since 2019
This year’s event marks the first time since 2019 that foreign dignitaries have been invited to the National Day Parade. Previously, in 2019, Sultan Bolkiah, then-Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and then-Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad were present to celebrate Singapore’s Bicentennial.
The inclusion of foreign leaders at national celebrations often mirrors international diplomatic relations. For instance, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris welcomed heads of state from numerous countries, reflecting global participation in major sporting events, similar to Singapore’s diplomatic engagement for its milestone celebration.
