Ex-Man United Star Timothy Fosu-Mensah Set for Return to Save Sheffield United
Former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is poised for a return to English football with Sheffield United, according to reports, as the club battles a deepening crisis near the bottom of the Premier League table. The 26-year-old, recently released by Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, is available on a free transfer and represents a potential immediate reinforcement for the struggling Blades.
Sheffield United’s defensive vulnerabilities have been a key factor in their tough season, conceding a league-high 52 goals in 24 matches. Fosu-Mensah, capable of playing at both right-back and center-back, offers versatility and experience that manager Chris Wilder desperately needs as he attempts to navigate a challenging relegation battle. His arrival would provide much-needed competition for places and a potential boost to a squad lacking confidence.
Fosu-Mensah joined Manchester United’s academy in 2014 and made 26 senior appearances for the club before moving to Leverkusen in January 2021. While he struggled to secure consistent playing time in Germany, completing just 1,050 minutes, he expressed a desire to play regularly, stating, “When you are 22, 23, or 24 years old you need to be playing.” He ultimately decided to leave Leverkusen seeking more minutes, a decision he felt was “the best decision in the end to go somewhere else where I would get more minutes.”
Despite injury setbacks, Fosu-Mensah remains enterprising, previously stating his desire to “win more trophies” and “play at the highest level of the game.” He told World Football Index last year,”I have had a few spells out with injury so I want to stay injury free in order to play and perform at the highest level.” A move to Sheffield United would offer him the possibility to reignite his career and prove his worth in the Premier League.
