Forsberg Praises Karlsson: Watch Highlights

Filip Forsberg lauded Erik Karlsson’s playmaking ability following Sweden’s 5-1 victory over Latvia in the Olympic hockey tournament’s round of 16, stating, “Not many more like him who can make such a pass.” The comment came after Karlsson’s assist led to Forsberg’s first goal of the Games.

The assist, described as “fantastic” by both Forsberg and commentators, involved a lengthy raid into the offensive zone by Karlsson, culminating in a pinpoint pass to Forsberg positioned at the far post. Forsberg acknowledged the quality of the pass, suggesting anyone would have been able to score on it. “A fantastic pass, not many can make a pass like that, but strangely enough you expect it from him,” Forsberg said to journalists after the game.

Forsberg’s goal was Sweden’s third of the match, contributing to their decisive win and securing their place in the quarter-finals against the United States. The forward, who leads all Swedish players in NHL goal-scoring this season, had been a healthy scratch for the first two games of the tournament. He expressed his readiness to contribute, stating he was “ready the whole time” and happy to have the opportunity to play and create chances.

The Swedish team has less than 24 hours to prepare for the quarter-final match against the United States, who finished second in their group behind Canada. Forsberg noted the quick turnaround, drawing a comparison to the compressed schedule of the NHL season. He emphasized the importance of rest before the upcoming game.

Prior to the tournament, Forsberg addressed his initial exclusion from the lineup, stating that while he would have preferred to be on the ice, he recognized there were multiple ways to contribute to the team. He acknowledged the decision rested with team management and respected the coach’s assessment of the team’s needs.

Sweden’s head coach, Sam Hallam, has previously explained his lineup decisions as being related to the specific roles assigned to each forward line, differentiating between the top lines and the bottom two lines. Discussions between Hallam and Forsberg regarding his role have been ongoing, according to Forsberg.
