SYDNEY – Former NRL player Luke Bateman has opened up about a years-long battle with gambling addiction, a “corrosive” culture within professional football, and the controversy surrounding his recent book deal, announced via his popular TikTok account. Bateman,who briefly appeared on reality TV show The Bachelor,has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok as a book influencer,a role that recently drew criticism from within the #BookTok community.
Bateman revealed he struggled with gambling throughout his NRL career, describing it as a destructive force that impacted his life both on and off the field. He also spoke critically of the football habitat, characterizing it as fostering a culture that normalized risky behaviors.
“I have been known for a few different things throughout my life, but it’s realy meaningful to be most well-known for the one thing that I am actually passionate about,” Bateman said, referencing his transition to book influencing.
His declaration of a two-book deal for a fantasy series sparked debate on #BookTok,with some users questioning whether he deserved the opportunity over more established or diverse writers. Bateman acknowledged the backlash, stating, “All these people were saying things about me without knowing anything about me.” He emphasized that he has been a dedicated writer for years, beginning work on his book prior to gaining online recognition.
“I’ve written since I was a kid … I started writing my book before any sort of online traction,” he explained.
Despite the criticism, Bateman expressed understanding for the frustration voiced by fellow book lovers.
“I was kind of like, ‘hey, I understand this anger and even though you’re angry at me, I’m one of you,'” he said.
Looking ahead,Bateman expressed a desire to use his platform to help others. ”I’m not exactly sure what the future holds, but whatever it is indeed, I know that it’ll be helping people.”
