Former Director Reveals Canceled Mass Effect Game's Choice System

Former Director Reveals Canceled Mass Effect Game’s Choice System

Mass Effect Fans Rally Past 75,000 Signatures Following BioWare Closure

Mass Effect fans seeking to rescue an unreleased project from Electronic Arts have pushed a Change.org petition past 75,000 signatures following the studio closure at BioWare. The canceled title, developed under the codename Mass Effect: Universe, was designed to map out alternate timelines that accounted for every major player choice made across the original Commander Shepard trilogy, according to former technical director Roman Tutan.

These revelations surfaced in the wake of Electronic Arts shutting down BioWare, an administrative move that scrapped the studio’s active pipeline. Alongside the cancellation of Mass Effect: Universe, leaked promotional materials and gameplay details for Mass Effect 5 had begun circulating online, promising mission structures with Hitman-style freedom. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Prime Video television adaptation remains in production.

Inside the Canceled Timeline Engine

Mass Effect: Universe relied on a complex logic system intended to track divergent story paths and resolve logical contradictions in real time. Speaking during a recent livestream reported by Kotaku, Tutan explained that players could pool save files to build parallel universes, likening the narrative freedom to Spike Chunsoft’s 2016 visual novel Zero Time Dilemma.

"Every choice made in the early Mass Effect games was taken into account," Tutan said, according to a translation by Bluesky user @loustica-lucia.bsky.social. He added that the development team built an internal query system that developers could pause at any moment to evaluate whether a specific plot point was logically possible under the existing world state.

Tutan also addressed whether Mass Effect: Universe would feature systems similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition and its world-customizing Keep application, answering, to some extent, yes. He further noted, It is closer to the possibility of making decisions that may contradict things you have already done or with things you have to do, which leads to creating ‘points’ of plot within the timeline. I mean, that was the theory. And it worked in practice. I will tell you one day about the technical side, because it was very interesting. Discussing the scale of the project, Tutan stated, We got crazy excited, damn it! Everything in the game, everything depended on the current state of events. And at any time you could pause the game, and I really mean pause it, then ask a system that solves logical equations: Is this possible? And if it is not possible, what conditions must be met for it to become possible?

Aside from the disappointing 2017 spin-off Andromeda, players previously enjoyed the ability to carry forward major decisions from each installment into the next, shaping a deeply personalized trilogy narrative.

Community Backlash and #SaveMassEffect Demands

The studio closure triggered immediate pushback from the player base. A petition launched by fan Joe Smith on Change.org under the banner #SaveMassEffect on October 21 has amassed 49,204 signatures, demanding that Electronic Arts either fund a proper continuation or sell the intellectual property to an outside studio. Within the final twenty-four hours captured in recent reports, the petition surged by thousands of new signatures, highlighting the immense global interest in the franchise’s fate.

Industry Predictions on Corporate Restructuring

Former series producer Mark Darrah predicted that Electronic Arts might eventually sell off former BioWare properties like Mass Effect and Dragon Age to improve corporate financial performance, though he noted that such a transaction would not happen immediately while the publisher prioritizes internal cost-cutting measures. Darrah noted that the intellectual properties would likely remain dormant under Electronic Arts in the interim, as the publisher would not hand them over to another development team.

An Unresolved Corporate Future

Electronic Arts has not outlined any public plans to license or sell the Mass Effect intellectual property following the closure of BioWare. While the petition continues to gain digital signatures and former developers disclose mechanics from canceled projects, official channels remain silent on whether the franchise will resume development under new management.
