Cerritos College Football Shutouts Moorpark, Improves to 1-1
CERRITOS, CA - The Cerritos College Falcons evened their record at 1-1 with a decisive 23-0 shutout victory over the Moorpark College Raiders on Saturday, September 7, 2015, at Falcon Stadium.
The Falcons took an early lead after a fourth-down safety against Moorpark in the first offensive series, resulting in a 2-0 advantage. The score remained unchanged until late in the second quarter when sophomore linebacker Adrian Castro recovered a fumble in the Raiders’ red zone at the Cerritos 22-yard line.
Freshman quarterback Jeremiah Calvin then lead a 22-yard drive, connecting with sophomore wide receiver Saxson Va’a for 16 yards and later finding sophomore wide receiver Malachi Wright for a 22-yard gain. Sophomore running back Josh Cason finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter,extending the Falcons’ lead to 9-0 at halftime.Cerritos continued its momentum in the second half, driving 59 yards on nine plays to increase their lead to 16-0. Cason again converted a key third down, and a pass interference penalty aided the drive, positioning the ball at the Moorpark 5-yard line. Calvin then connected with freshman wide receiver Charles Clinton II for a touchdown.
The Falcons extended their lead to 23-0 after Va’a returned a punt into Moorpark territory. Calvin found Clinton again, this time for an 18-yard gain on fourth-and-nine, setting up Clinton’s second touchdown of the game – a seven-yard reception.
Despite being limited to 278 yards of total offense, Cerritos capitalized on strong field position generated by their defense. Castro, along with sophomore linebacker Rocky Jack, led the defensive effort. jack recorded a pair of quarterback hurries, an interception, and a tackle for loss. The Falcon defense finished with seven tackles for loss and forced three Moorpark fumbles.
Cerritos will host Santa Barbara City College next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Falcon Stadium.
