Flight Crews Face Highest Risk of Radiation-Related Cancer Deaths, Study Finds
Flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of dying from radiation-related cancers than workers in any other occupation, including those handling radioactive materials, according to a peer-reviewed study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine. Evaluating Confounding Factors and Regulatory Gaps
Despite statistical associations, the study authors acknowledged several limitations in their methodology. The research team could not quantify the exact radiation dose accumulated by individual flight attendants and pilots during their careers, nor could they completely rule out potential misclassifications of occupations on death certificates.
Researchers also noted that frequent disruption of the body’s internal clock, caused by jet lag, crossing time zones, and irregular work schedules, remains a possible contributor that can worsen cancer risk. Federal oversight of these occupational hazards remains sparse. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledges that aircrews encounter ionizing radiation, yet the federal government currently establishes no federal dose limits and requires no monitoring.
“You can’t manage an exposure you’ve decided not to measure,” Dr. Vishal Patel stated via email. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA representing 55,000 flight attendants, echoed these concerns, stating that the report confirms long-standing union demands to treat radiation exposure with proper regulatory seriousness. “The risk is known, but crew are not educated or informed.
