ROME – Europe surged to a commanding 6.5 to 2.5 lead after the opening day of the 2023 Ryder Cup, fueled by standout performances from Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, and a strategically effective pairing strategy employed by captain Luke Donald. The European team secured three wins in the afternoon foursomes session, building on their earlier success in the morning fourballs.
A pivotal moment came in the opening match where Fleetwood and rahm defeated Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, 2&1. Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton then continued Europe’s momentum, defeating Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka 4&3. Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick further extended the lead with a 5&3 victory over Scheffler and Russell Henley, a pairing heavily influenced by Europe’s data analysis.
The United States found limited success, with Xander Schauffele and patrick Cantlay securing a 2up win against Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland in the final match of the day. MacIntyre was briefly distracted by a spectator during his tee shot at the 17th, a critical moment that allowed the US to gain the advantage.
Earlier,Bryson DeChambeau and Justin thomas lost to Rahm and Hatton,4&3,despite a strong drive from DeChambeau on the first hole. DeChambeau has now lost both of his matches thus far. He attributed europe’s success to ”luck.”
Donald acknowledged the meaningful prospect before his team, stating the potential to “make history.” Concerns were raised regarding spectator interference during play, with multiple instances of disruptions impacting players’ shots.
